Energy Mythbuster #8

Mythbusting Fact #8:
The best way to save energy for your computer is to turn it off when you’re not using it. The second best way is to set it to automatically go into “sleep” or “hibernate” mode to save energy. Also, make sure the next computer you purchase has an Energy Star label. Contrary to popular belief, using a screensaver saves no energy.

it's true but what is also true is that many computers now days don't use much more energy than a 100 watt bulb.

So.. in the bigger scheme of things... someone can enjoy the luxury of leaving their computer on - if they just go through their home and replace incandescent bulbs with CFs.

That's what I would like to see this blog focus on.

People in California, New York, New Jersey and Europe use 1/3 less electricity than Virginian's do.

What would be helpful to your readers would be to show how the folks that achieve the 1/3 saving.. achieve it....

Harping on people about their computers.... is really no different than harping on them about leaving the bathroom light on - both probably use a similar amount of energy and that strategy alone.. is not getting to the real issues.

Making folks fell guilty about using their computers ... is not going to lead to lower energy usage as computers themselves are a miniscule portion of the usage.

On single outdoor light ..left on overnight.. uses much more energy than a laptop....

I have to disagree with Larry G. I think doing anything to conserve energy is good and that the tips about how to conserve energy from a computer are good ones.

I also do not think that the post was implying at all that you should not use your computer. When you are not using it, putting it into hybernate (or setting it up so that it does it automatically )is easy and painless. Larry, your other tips about the CFL lightbulbs were a nice addition to your comment.

I enjoyed this post and I will definitely heed your advice.
