An improperly placed thermostat can have a significant impact on your heating and cooling usage and costs. If the thermostat is located in direct sunlight, it will not get a true reading of the actual temperature in your home.
In the winter, your home could be cooler if your thermostat is warmed by the sunlight and turns off the heating system prematurely. In the summer, on the other hand, your cooling system will run longer than necessary if the thermostat is warmed by the sun. You wouldn't think that improper thermostat placement would happen that much since they are usually installed by heating and cooling specialists, but I have seen it in a number of homes.
Check your thermostat placement if you are experiencing inaccurate temperature readings or if you suspect your system is turning on or off at the wrong time.

how does one move their thermostat? I thought it was wired into the wall?
If the homeowner has any DYI expertise, moving a thermostat is not that difficult.
Generally, there are three or four color-coded wires attached to the back of the unit. It will require relocating the wires from the heating or cooling system to the new location and that could be the most difficult part of the process. It also may require some patching of the wall where the old thermostat was located. The heating or cooling system should be turned off. Attach the colored wires to the corresponding color-coded terminal on the back of the thermostat. Turn on the heating or cooling system.
If you're not comfortable attempting to move the thermostat yourself then contact a HVAC technician.
As a home performance contractor I have some experience moving thermostats and I would also recommend taking a photo of the wire connections prior to disconnecting, then using that photo to reconnect by. The reason for this is some manufacturers use different wire color coding schemes and while most connections can be made by their corresponding color on the thermostat some will trick you.
