To help save on the cooling costs of your home, consider using ceiling fans. Moving air over the body provides a cooling effect. The use of ceiling fans means savings of around 25% on cooling costs and can make the temperature seem 10 degrees cooler.
Remember, ceiling fans cool people, not rooms. So when you’re not in the room, turn the fan off to save even more money.
You can use a ceiling fan all year round; just make sure it is spinning in the right direction for either cooling in summer or warm air circulation in winter. In the summer, you want the blades facing so the fans push the air downwards and vice versa in the winter.

Nice advice! I found more at http://ceilingfans.comlu.com/
Hm! I never knew that you should be spinning the fan different directions in the winter and summer, and I have lived with ceiling fans my whole life! Thanks for the tip.
Another good tip is if you coat the fan blades with furniture polish, it is harder for dust to stick to them. This results in much less dusty blades!
Ceiling fans can really reduce your energy bills. Most people use there ceiling fan in the summer to circulate the air around the room, to create a breeze. When there's an effective air movement, it can make a difference of 7-8 degrees, so that results in lower air conditioning usage.
You can also use a ceiling fan in the winter. If you use it in the winter, you can push down the hot air, so you get a better warm/cold air circulation.
Than there are energy star ceiling fans, they use 50% less energy than conventional ceiling fans.
