Have a Great 4th of July Celebration

With the holiday weekend upon us, what a great time to remember to implement energy conservation measures during the festivities.
  • Enjoy the grilled hamburgers, chicken, or tofu with reusable utensils. Buy plates and silverware made of biodegradable material.
  • Buy locally grown produce.
  • Using a party tub full of ice and cold beverages? Also designate a recycling tub for all the cans and plastic bottles.
  • Since you will be outside enjoying the weather, remember to draw the shades in the house to keep excess sunlight out and also turn the thermostat up, no use in cooling a house no one is in.
  • To enjoy the fireworks outside, turn the inside lights off – it reduces any light interference.
  • Consider buying Carbon Offsets to reduce your party’s footprint.
As with any celebration, remember to be safe and follow any safety precautions in activities such as bike riding, enjoying fireworks, or swimming.

We hope you enjoy the holiday and if there are others ways you are conserving, let us know.

I guess I'm a bit late for the 4th of July, but since people tend to enjoy grilling on other days, too, I'd like to offer a quick link on how to save a bit of energy when grilling hamburgers.

anyone know how to read a smart meter? It has three different screens, on mine this morning one said “384 kwh”the next reported “3r 1777″ and the final screen had “888.88.8″

no readily available info on dom.com regarding a consumer reading their own meter

Great question.

Provided you are on a standard residential rate, the Smart Meter will have a digital LCD screen that cycles through 3 screens, the 'kWh' screen, the local area communications path screen, and the maintenance screen.

The most valuable screen to you is the 'kWh' screen. This is the total cumulative consumption reading of the smart meter at this location. Use this reading in conjunction with the last bill to calculate your current usage. Ex: last bill meter reading was 1000 kWh and the current reading is 1200 kWh then the difference is 200 kWh in usage since your last meter reading.

The second screen that shows is the Local Area Communications path of the smart meter to the collector meter which that this device is communicating.

The Final screen is the maintenance screen of the smart meter. This screen is for Dominion field personnel should there be a need to do a site visit to the customer's home.

To see what these screens look like, we added an FAQ on how to read your smart meter here - http://www.dom.com/about/conservation/smartgrid-charlottesville.jsp
