Wanted to drop in and give you a status on the voluntary Green Power program we’re offering to our Virginia customers. You might recall the blog post on February 9, “Support Green Power” which gave an overview of the program that became available to customers in January of this year.
Things are going great for the program! More than 2,500 households and businesses have enrolled already - and we’re just getting started! The majority of these participants have enrolled in the 100% option.
The renewable energy supported by these customers has already made a BIG difference - these Green Power customers have prevented the release of 8,181,659 pounds of carbon dioxide so far this year. Yes, you read that right - more than 8 million pounds. That’s like taking 674 cars off the road for a year.
By the end of the year, with support for new Green Power customers who are continuing to enroll every month, we expect to more than quadruple the impact this program has had so far.
If you’re a Dominion customer and want to enroll in the program or learn more about your renewable energy options, visit www.dom.com, keyword: Green Power.
We look forward to seeing the enrollment number grow!

While these kinds of programs are a nice step it would be more important for Dominion to urge Congress to adopt a strong and freestanding national Renewable Energy Standard.
Wow, 8 million pounds of CO2. That's significant. We can do more, though. When is DOM going to open their eyes and realize that burning coal, and other fossil fuels, is not the way to go? This is the 21st century and we have to be smarter than we were 100+ years ago. Permanent damage is being done to our environment and we must stop it now or suffer the consequences.
PC Trickle Saver is what I use to conserve energy! It fights phantom power wasting, and that saves a lot of moolah!
Dominion does support renewable power and already has about 1,500 megawatts under development or in operation.
We also have publicly committed to meeting the renewable power goals of Virginia and North Carolina, where we have 2.4 million customers.
Regarding a national standard, those discussions are now underway at the federal level and we are following them carefully.
Any standards that emerge must be realistic and reasonably cost effective.
We will keep you posted.
STOP LYING! Dominion does NOT support renewable power generation and continues to ACTIVELY lobby and fund opposition to renewable power incentives, regulations, and programs. For example, Dominion lobbied hard against Governor Kaine's mandatory 19% energy efficiency standard. Dominion fought a mandatory renewables portfolio standard for VA and contributes to national groups that lobby against the federal RPS.
Don't believe the hype that Dominion spews. They spend more on advertising every year than they do on renewables.
It doesn’t sound like we’re going to change your mind, but I do think we should note for the record that Dominion is one of the top 10 utility wind developers in the country, and we have committed publicly to meeting Virginia’s voluntary goals for renewable power and conservation.
We also recently announced a dozen new conservation programs for our customers, including Smart Meters, which are expected to reduce electricity consumption in Dominion's service area by about 2.4 million megawatt-hours per year by 2024 and avoid a total of more than 15 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
I am a participant in Dominion Green Power and I recently installed a solar (PV) system on my home. This system generates Renewable Energy Credits (RECs). I was wondering why Virginia Dominion Power does not purchase Renewable Energy Credits from the state of Virginia, where it operates, but does purchase them from other states.
The Dominion Green Power program will purchase renewable energy certificates (RECs) in Virginia whenever feasible. In fact, the program just made its first purchase of Virginia RECs this year, and will continue to pursue additional opportunities to support renewable energy development in Virginia.
We are also interested in purchasing RECs from small residential renewable generators as well. If you are interested in selling your RECs to the Dominion Green Power program, please contact us at GreenPower@dom.com.
