You might remember in 2008 when we did a post on Solar Film.
I wanted to bring the idea back up in time for summer. Solar Film is a layer of plastic-like film that is applied to the inside of your home windows, shielding the hot sun, keeping your home cooler, and saving you money on your electric bill.
Solar film also helps reduce fading of your flooring and furniture, reduces glair, blocks 99% of UV rays, and strengthens the glass.
This is a great weekend DIY project, which will help make your home more comfortable for the upcoming summer.
Here’s a good video giving you the basic steps to apply window film yourself.
Another benefit to installation is that it is a product that qualifies for a tax credit of up to 30% of the cost!

yes this could be a very easy way to conserve the energy and thus reducing the electric bills.
I’ve been told to look around and compare. But I don’t know the differences in solar panel manufacturers and equipment. Also, how does the financing work? Do I need a 8,000 credit score to qualify?I found this site- which is pretty good… FreeCleanSolar.com . I just want to find a site that has enough info for me to consider solar.
Maria,
Solar can be a great source of energy if used in the right application. As for detailed information on equipment and financing, you will need to talk to your local solar contractor.
The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners would be a great place to start finding a local certified contractor. For a broader perspective on financing and tax incentives, check out the Database of State Incentives for Renewable and Efficiency, the EPA, and ENERGYSTAR.
When talking to your local contractor, make sure to ask them about Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), a REC “represents the property rights to the environmental, social, and other nonpower qualities of renewable electricity generation.”
If you decide that installing solar panels is not the right application for you and you still want to support more renewable energy, consider the Dominion Green Power program (provided you are a Dominion Virginia Power customer).
It’s an easy voluntary program that gives you a practical way to purchase renewable energy certificates (RECs), which mean you are supporting renewable energy and claiming the environmental benefits!
