Some Lite Reading, On The Topic Of Energy Efficiency

Over the past few years, I’ve begun a collection of “Green Books”. Some related to my job, others just that I know I need to read to see what others are recommending about going green.

Here is a list of some of the better ones that I’ve picked up:
  • “The Green Book” by Elizabeth Rogers and Thomas m. Kostigenby. It is coined as the everyday guide to saving the planet one simple step at a time. Celebrities like Ellen DeGeneres, Cameron Diaz, Tim McGraw and others tell how they are making a difference for the environment.
  • “True Green” by Kim McKay and Jenny Bonnin. This is a great and simple book about 100 ways you can contribute to a healthier planet. There is also a “True Green @ Work” version. This book is where I learned about sleep disorder, or phantom load.
  • “Consumer Guide to Home Energy Savings” by Amann, Wilson, & Ackerly. I actually bought this book through ACEEE (American Council for Energy-Efficient Economy. It is a great reference book for all the latest SEER levels, insulation ratings, window labels, and much more.
  • I recognize there are two sides to every story, which is why I also have read “Cool It” by Bjorn Lomborg which expresses skepticism to global warming. This book explains what resources we should dedicate to first in combating global issues.
There seem to always be daily news articles published in newspapers, magazines or online. Let us know when you run across a good book or news story.

Thanks for the recommendation of books to stay informed about energy conservation. I'll pass the information along to our local library too.

My energy bill is way too high.I was talking with my boss who agreed he pays to much in energy costs. He said solar can help reduce the monthly energy bill.He was saying that this one time investment will save me a lot and take care of my future power needs. Moreover, my energy company won’t bug me with increasing rates all of the time.So I did some research on this solar panel thing.I hit upon a website www.freecleansolar.com which has a lot of info and price comparisons, financing and leasing, tax credits and rebates.I feel more knowledgeable now.Do you guys think that I should go for this solar?Let me know

Kenneth,

Pending on where you live, this past heating season in Virginia has been particularly colder than past years, which could be a result of your high bills. But make sure you’re picking the ‘low hanging fruit’ of energy conservation to help with your bills: thermostat setting, quality insulation, caulking and sealing cracks, weather-stripping, appropriate water heater temperature, and CFL bulbs. Check out our page on Energy Saving Tips and Information, it’s packed with great ideas and content.

Without doing an individual investigation, it’s hard to tell if solar would be a good investment. There are many factors just like you mentioned (pricing options, tax credits, incentives, amount of solar arrays, etc) that would all factor into the decision. Solar is still an evolving and emerging technology, but there are some applications and locations where it is a quality investment. Take a look at the ENERGY STAR website on solar for links and tax credits.

On a more general level, books such as "No Impact Man" by Colin Beavan are an excellent way to think about the big picture and all the ways (both small and great) that we can make a difference.

I actually have a copy of “Consumer Guide to Home Energy Savings” and let me just say it's probably one of the most comprehensive books on energy savings for the homeowner I've ever read.

If you're looking for some online reading check out Lisa and Phil Malone's site about their house, it's incredible :) www.ourcoolhouse.com
